What exactly do the sonar under the phantom?

I Just moving in with phantom and i'm a little bit curius about that feature!

ok does that meen that if i'm exemple at 3 feets above the ground and i'm flying they will stay at 3 feets all along of my trajectory even if the ground goes up or down?
