I have read the posts about RTH, but I did not find an answer to part of my question so thanks for being patient with my question.

I'm considering a Phantom 3 Standard but have a question. When using RTH it is recommended to increase altitude to avoid trees, etc. What happens or what do you when the quad loses signal and automatically goes into RTH mode near trees or other obstacles? If you are out of range at the time, it seems that you have no vertical control.

In the DJI GO app, you should set the RTH altitude before each flight. If your Phantom needs to RTH, it'll first ascend to that set altitude -- or, fly back at the current altitude if it's already above the set RTH altitude.

You preset the RTH altitude in the DJI GO app. Once signal is lost or RTH is triggered, the bird will automatically rise to the preset height and then return home.
