Should you keep this firmware update on your SD card all the time? Is it necessary to update new batteries?

You can remove it after you start up your Phantom with each battery installed. After that point, it's okay to remove it from your memory card. However, it will not hurt anything if you keep it on your memory card.
You can keep it on your SD card all the time but make sure you delete any txt files. Yes you need to have it on the card to update the batteries. I personally do not keep it on the card
