Phantom 2 Vision+ (Plus) is Better than P2 w/GoPro

ok I flew on my lunch break across the street from my building where I work.. it was again windy with gusts > 20mph.. cloudy and over-all pretty crappy flying conditions.. here are some of those images (about 3-4.5MB each):

I have another half dozen and video on the SDcard but the battery I brought is now dead and the other is at home, lol, so, I'll upload those tonight and post back.. ( I don't have an sdcard adapter yet)

These were taken with totally stock options except set to RAW.

hope this helps!

they are the pics that were taken from the drone with the option set to RAW...I didn't see any other files to download from the drone to my phone -- I'll check tonight when I get home and am able to look at the SDcard -- I expected to see .raw or .dng files but I just assumed they were .jpg with no compression

Naive newbie question here, but....is there a way to change the setting on the P2V+ camera so that the pincushion effect is diminished? On the P2 with GoPro, you can shoot in "medium" mode on the GoPro so that there's minimal pincushion effect. The P2V+ video looks fantastic in every other respect, but for someone like me who's torn whether to get the P2V+ or the P2 w/GoPro, that pincushion effect would be a dealbreaker for me.

FYI - when you have the app set to capture RAW/DNG images it saves both DNG and JPG to the on-board SD card. Your mobile device will only sync the JPGs through the app to your device. To grab the unprocessed DNG files you need to go direct to the SD card through your desktop or laptop.

But you can just fix this in post. You would fix it in post on a GoPro too.

Is that right? I didn't realize that the GoPro (in medium aspect mode, anyway) would require editing in post to remove pincushion.

Thanks Jayson!

These definitely look better than what I've been getting from my P2V. If you could please post the DNG files when you get a chance, that would be really helpful too. I'm going to take a few pictures outside with my GoPro later today (and tomorrow when it's sunny) for comparison. The final results will determine my ultimate route.

This would be soooo much easier if DJI and GoPro would get together and make a "Super Vision" product like the V+ that they could market together! (Of course the lens replacement thread here would probably come close to leading to that... so maybe a V+ would be a better option than going with a P2/3 axis Zenmuse and putting in all the FPV stuff myself.)

From the home location posted on your profile, I'm going to take a wild guess and say that those pics were taken while flying in downtown Tampa? I spend a winter down in that wonderful city a couple years ago, as the development lead on a really cool project... Worked out of the Deloitte offices just a couple blocks away from the park where I think you were flying. (Taco Bus and FRESH were my two favorite lunch spots.)

I see the same old stuff... both lower corners suffering from OOF/smearing and CA/purple fringing issues around the image...... they were right the same camera just in a different package.....

ok guys here's a few of those images in DNG.. I guess I took the 1st batch in normal jpg before choosing the option for RAW..

rename these files to *.dng, I guess the webserver doesn't have a mime for dng and it was redirecting to 404.. right click and save as.. (21MB each)

http://www.jaysonhanes.com/p2vplus/DJI00025dng.jpg
http://www.jaysonhanes.com/p2vplus/DJI00026dng.jpg

here's some of the videos:
http://www.jaysonhanes.com/p2vplus/DJI00018.mp4 (40MB)
http://www.jaysonhanes.com/p2vplus/DJI00023.mp4 (419MB)
http://www.jaysonhanes.com/p2vplus/DJI00024.mp4 (97MB)
http://www.jaysonhanes.com/p2vplus/DJI00027.mp4 (448MB, more dynamic flying)

it's worth noting that I couldn't get more than 5 satellites lock for gps.. so there was no GPS stabilization at all today.

@ Jayson - those jpgs you posted earlier were good and much better than anything I have ever got from my P2V. Later when I can get on my desktop pc I will look at the DNG's but maybe this is the first conclusive proof that the camera is indeed different and better than the FC200.

Thanks for taking the time to do this :)

Thanks for putting the RAWs up, they have given me everything I needed to make the decision not to purchase a Vision+.

Issues I see:

Poor focus at the edges of the image
Dynamic range is very narrow indeed
Extremely noisy
Bad chromatic aberrations at the edges

I was really hoping that the stills would be better than those I can get from the GoPro H3B (which are pretty poor to be honest, but useable) but unfortunately, from the examples here, it's not the case.

I've attached a pic from my H3B which has had lens correction applied for comparison. Pay attention to the noise level when compared to the Vision+ images, also the overall sharpness.

Not sure if this would be of interest, but here is my maiden flight from tonight (only 30% battery levels from the box):
raw unedited mp4:
http://jaysonhanes.com/p2vplus/DJI00001.mp4 (257mb, right click and save-as)

and youtube:

I am absolutely speechless watching this video.. is it a goPro? I don't care!! it's freaking AMAZING to me that this is the result of flying gently in these kinds of winds, under cloudy skies at dusk.. I'm waiting for the batteries to charge and I'm going to flying alllll weekend!

After downloading the mp4 I'm really impressed! Those rotors must really be powerful. I noticed when you flew over the tree in the drive that it shook violently and continued to do so for the entire video! Seems like the other trees were affected the same way. :)

What type of program is needed to open a DNG file? ACDC will not.

New member here (joined today). Ordering first phantom (V2+) later today.

To say that I'm more of a photographer than a Phantom pilot isn't saying much since I've never flown one. That said I am a dSLR photographer, shoot mostly in RAW mode, and process photos in Lightroom. It's not really too surprising that an unedited DNG right from the camera isn't as clean as a JPG from a GoPro. Even without additional PC editing, the in-camera process of creating a JPG from the raw sensor data does a fair bit of image sharpening, noise reduction, fixing chromatic aberrations (purple fringing), etc. This all happens before the images leaves the camera.

I'm not saying the dynamic range is great in the V2+ (or the GoPro for that matter). It's just hard to compare an unprocessed raw to a JPG. The GoPro might still be better in the end. But the V2+ raw will be a lot better than straight out of the camera with desktop processing. If no desktop processing is planned, photos should be shot in JPG anyway.

For me (and that's just for me), it appears the V2+ camera will work well enough for my simple hobbyist plans, at least for now. Unless I decide to spend enough to get a drone large enough hang my full frame SLR underneath, I'm OK with limited dynamic range, sharpness, etc. The ability to start with a RAW image is one of the attractions of the V2+. Being new to this, I also liked the fact that FPV is already built in.

Even though the + has been out for a couple of days now I am still not clear about the capabilities of the camera.

I'm waiting to see this as well. Late last week I decided that I was going to return the P2V I bought on 4/1 back to B&H. Now I'm trying to decide which route I want to go with... Just picked up a GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition from REI for $320, so the choice is going to be between the P2 with a 3 axis gimbal and GoPro, or the P2V+. The choice is entirely dependent upon camera quality.

If you're interested in better video quality get a phantom 2 with h33d combo which is under A thousand and use your gopro and add am fpv system when you can which will run you at least $300 if you want to see elemetry info on screen.

Nice picture! Thanks.
I did some experiment with dng raw using lightroom. The lens profile is as advertised, it removes barrel distortion. I also adjusted some parameters. It looks pretty good. I resized the picture so that I can upload to forum.
I think it will look even better if it is a bright day.
