Phantom 1 won't link to controller

Hi all, new to the forum just today after struggling to get this Phamton 1 up and flying.

Got it from a friend who had no history on it. Tried to link to the controller but no dice, called DJI and found out the controller was for a Phantom 2. Bought a Phantom 1 controller from Dronefly and tried to link it but still no joy. Phantom says it's version 1.2.1 and controller says model DJ6. The controller that was given to me says model PVT581.

I've updated software on both the Phantom and the controller, used the SW to check all the settings (what a pain in the *** that was with the drivers!), and I still cannot figure out what do to.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

You did press the button on the receiver?

Yes, did all the tricks I can find in the manual, on forums, and on YouTube. Talked to DJI again, apparently I have the PPM receiver and it won't connect to the DJ6 and I need to buy the Part 31 receiver board.
