This was the first day it has happened to me, both times I had no signal but was able to return home and once in sit I was controlling it and landed. The first time I didnt do anything but go home and charge. The second time I powered off my ps3 and turned it back on and it connected. Before I powered off I looked around in settings under the controller section and noticed lots of red spikes and drops on the different channels it was showing. My firmware is up to date, what should I check?

You flying a standard or advanced (title suggests A your post says S)?
Either way signal loss varies a lot with where and how you are flying. Try somewhere away from interference and obstructions and see how you go.

Advanced, I am thinking it must be some interference in the areas I was flying since I have flown it a bunch and it only happened those two times
