Been using my P3 for 2 days now and when the app shows i'm about 1000 feet away I get a weak signal alert. Is this normal?

It should be capable of significantly more than that.
Check the angles of the antennas to see if you can improve things.

If its anything like my P2 the fpv can drop out very quickly if there is lots of wifi signals around.
I have one spot where I can get 400m or so but only if i drop resolution. Other places is a lot (lot ) better

Nothing about the P3 with Lightbridge is like the P2 series with Wifi.

Close call! :) yeah he should have manually flew back for a faster return.

3.2 miles is amazing without any additional antennas!

Are you flying in a neighborhood and or city? WiFi signals from home networks will reduce the range. If you go out to a low populated area with less WiFi signals you should see 1.2 mile range.
