accidentally recorded in mov, plays fine if watching back through the iPad whilst connected to the controller....but can I get it to play on anything else, heck no!

Of course as you know and MOV file is Apple. You can install QuickTime on your PC and it will play it just fine

I would say that the files are corrupted but they play on when playing direct from P4P

The problem is not with the files, it's the software you are using or its configuration.
Download VLC media player and it plays just about anything.

Whether you record as mp4 or mov should make no difference and certainly won't cause a file to be unplayable.
That you can play it in the app shows that it isn't wrecked at all.
