While sitting at idol for 10-20 second, the motors begin to increase rpm, but will shut off completely with the remote. Cause? Am afraid the Phantom will take off on its own if left alone.

Did the calibration and IMU (was prompted to do that by the software) during the last software/firmware update.
I'd do another IMU calibration... maybe it wasn't completely flat or got bumped or something.
Do the indications on your display show its moving (showing a speed).
Mine did that... said it was going over 200MPH while sitting on the ground. Motors spooled up (I assume to counter itself) and it eventually tipped over in its own.
