I flew today out of my back yard and I was only able to go about a mile , I also flew yesterday and was able to get 1.2 miles is that good range ? Is there anything I can do to get more from it?

Many things impact range, from obstacles to interference.

Unless your back yard has 3 miles of flat, treeless, interference free land, I'd be pretty pumped from that range. If you want more range, read the previous sentence.

You're forgetting line of sight signal transmission. As the bird increases the distance at a fixed altitude the LOS on the signal flattens out, putting more stuff in it's path, to avoid this gain altitude as you gain distance.
