Lightning cable length, how short can I go?

I use the 12" Cambond with my iPad Air 2 ...just barely long enough. You'd probably do a little better with the 13" if you can find it. Also, be aware that you'll need a cable with the chip inside it so it won't disconnect over and over and over...and over again. Speaking from experience here

I have the 13 as well, You guys might want a 13 to 14 just for future antenna mods as they can require a bit longer length for routing purposes.

Does everybody center their tablet in the holder? Seems like most are so light that you could offset it several inches without it really being a problem. That would bring the tablet's port closer to the remote's.
