Latest technology or "keeping up with the Joneses?

Is the GoPro Hero 3 that good? Why does no one use the Hero 2 or Hero 1? Is the video stream so bad? I know that some folks require extreme video quality, but for us guys that just wanna get some overhead stuff will the Hero 2 or 1 be sufficient?

I haven't seen hero 1 footage but the hero 2 HD is great, it's fine for a lot of shooting. In fact, most hero 3 models use the same sensor as the 2. The hero 3 has more modes, resolutions and speeds, more support for raw formats, and the black editions have a better sensor for increased low light performance. The thing is, most gimbals and mounts for the phantom only support the hero3 because that's the current version.

Hero3 is also lighter and smaller.
