Is the bottom yellow knob/dial for gain control on the phantom 1? Below the one for gimbal control

No, it's not how that works. The bottom pot doesn't do anything on the 2.4Ghz Phantoms, nobody knows what it's there for.
If you're talking about PID gains, you set that to your gimbal control lever (X1). If you're talking about more power for the TX, that only applies to the 5.8Ghz models.
