Hi, what exactly does the wifi range extender do and is it essential?

I bought a controller that was a return. Upon further inspection it is missing the range extender and seller says it is only used to control the camera. He is unsure if camera will still work without it but said it has no effect on the P2V in any other way that he is aware of.

Will the P2V and camera still work without this part?

    Thanks in advance.

"Capture/Record Button (on the bottom of the camera)
Capture function: Press the button once (less than 2 seconds) to take a single capture.
Record function: Press the button once (greater than 2 seconds) to begin recording. Press once again to stop."

But it's not very convenient when P2V is in the air...

Also, without the range extender you will not have any telemetry, height, speed or range, or number of satellites in lock. (although in NAZA-M mode the arm lights will let you know if you lose sat lock)
