I did it.. I was able to fly my Phantom 3 Pro on top of Pikes Peak in Colorado.. elevation 14,111 ft
I was super nervous about it.. 25-30 mph winds... 40 deg temps...
I didn't venture out very far.. 150ft up or so.. max 400ft out..
Just flew around for a bit making sure I could still handle her in the massive wind up there..

For those that wonder.. Pikes Peak is a Nation Forest.. Not a National Park.. As of June 19, 2015 there are no restrictions for flying in National Forests..

Sweet

Listen were did you get this info if I may ask...
As of June 19, 2015 there are no restrictions for flying in National Forests?
I live a stones trow away from the Cleveland national forest so much I could do.

Nice video! Thanks for sharing!

Very hard to keep the props out of the video when the quad is tilted 20-30º fighting a 30mph head wind just to hover. Flying downwind at 50% wind speed would help, as well as tilting the camera down so not so much of the sky shows. But that sky is awesome, I have been up there and the view is just breathtaking. Good job, I would have been nervous as well at that altitude.

Flew my P3P from the top of Mt. Bierstadt today. Over 14,000 feet and it performed perfectly, even in the gusty winds! All the bystanders had their doubts it would fly. One guy saying he was a science teacher and that the air would be too thin for it to work. Remind me not to let my kids go to his school. I took it out about 500 feet max over the cliff, dropped it down in the cavern, then back up about 100 feet above me. I'm definitely becoming more and more confident with my Phantom!!!

This was a quick edit, took it from 4k down to 1080p so my pc could handle it. Still need to add audio at some point.

@Opman711 Go ahead and start your own thread for this in the 'photos & videos' area.
You don't want to hijack threads with your own video right? ;)

Nice video! I was amazed at how well the P2V+ handled at similar altitudes in Nepal. Basically couldn't notice the air was thinner from the flight characteristics. I'll go back next year and try much higher.

Some info for that "science teacher".

The UH-60L has two T700-GE-701C turbine engines each making 1890shp. It weighs around 17,000lbs +- 500lbs when fueled and a typical mission load out. The service ceiling is 19,000'. This isn't due to the rotor system not being able to move enough air to keep going higher but the engines are limited in power due to that thinner air.

Electrically driven rotary winged aircraft would have a significantly higher service ceiling. Not sure just where the air gets too thin as the record for helicopter altitude is slightly over 40,800' set back in 1972 by an Aerospatiale Lama.

nice video. Where you using any sort of filter?

Thanks for your comments everyone... No I wasn't using a filter.

There was about 30 people around the summit and they were all intrigued except one guy who came up to me and said "I didn't come up here to listen to you fuc!ing drone". There always seems to be one in every crowd I guess.

I would of said, would you like to fly it?

To which I would have replied, "Well, in about 20 minutes, the battery will be drained and you won't have to listen to it. Until then, enjoy the view."
