    Hi all,

I've seen some Gopro Hero 3 Black footage in evening/night scenes that were less noisy as mine is this film
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmgpgCcbdqo

And the wakeboard clip is also a bit disturbed with the colors. At that time I had the setting on Whitebalance Raw.
In what kind of scenes do you use that setting?

    Generally these are my settings:
    Pal
    1080p
    50fps
    medium
    Protune On

I would love to hear some tips and tops on improving the quality of the video footage

    Cheers

Firstly nice video but you were very lucky it seems at 1:29, that ball must have been very close to the prop. Had it hit you would have had a dead but washed phantom and gopro.

Using protune disables all in camera noise reduction and should only be used if your going to do post work, it looks as if you have done some there but I dont know what software or methods your using for grading.

In most cases even with PT on in decent light there wont be much of an issue with noise, but using higher frame rates will make the image noisier once light is a bit lower so if your getting too much noise first thing is to reduce the frame rate. In low light with pt on its possible to get ok results but it takes a fair bit of work in post and also some software noise reduction. Neat video is a great noise reduction plugin for those times when you need it. For most people shooting in low light it may be best to turn pt off and let the gopro add its noise reduction and image settings which are normally ok in those conditions.

This article by Abe Kislevitz is great to give an idea on all the modes on the hero3 black.

I prefer to use protune and cam raw wb as this avoids the cyan sky's that seem quite common when using auto wb on the h3 BE. Also I mostly use 2.7k30 to get more light for when needed but I also use ND filters for those bright days when I want to slow the shutter down. For lower frame rates on the phantom you need to tackle the jello issue by balancing everything, anti jello mount and some ND filters for bright days. The SRP Blurfix3 micro 52 adapter works great for me and not only gives you some control over shutter speeds it protects the lens if you crash.

Here are a few of my phantom videos to show what my methods give me image quality wise.

Wow... thanks Martcerv for your reply.
This will help me learn how to adjust the GoPro settings in different lighting situations.

Tomorrow a ND filter will be delivered. So hopefully that will reduce Jello.
And I use FCP X for stabilization and colour adjustments.. So far that can really improve image quality.

I'll take some time to watch your videos.

    Thanx a lot man :)

    Cheers

I have a similar quality issue.
    these are my settings:
    NTSC
    1080p
    30fps
    medium
    Protune Off

I get good color but lots of compression artifacts.

    Thanks,
    Carey

The biggest advantage of protune is the higher bitrate which will reduce compression artifacts so if using the black and you don't mind doing some post processing its the best mode to use in good light. If using a hero2 or hero3 white then its a little different as the sensor in these cameras is not as good and in protune which is pretty much a raw unprocessed image the lack of noise reduction makes the image out of those cameras quite noisy in anything but perfect light. Image quality in the gopro is generally best in the widest fov modes with medium suffering a little more by being a sensor crop and narrow suffers the most in terms of noise in lower light.

You can use the free gopro cineform software as it is really a very powerful tool once you learn to use it properly. There is a new version coming soon too that will also turn it into a more useful editing package for free but atm its really only used for grading footage and you still need to finish your editing in another editor. I use adobe premiere cs6 but any of the decent editors will do most of the basic things just as well and the new gopro editor will be good for the basic edits if thats all you need.

    Thanx Matcerv
This http://abekislevitz.com/understanding-your-new-gopro/ helped me a lot to understand my GoPro better. I'll try the 2.7K setting the next few days and see what kind of IQ i'll get.

And also will turn off PT during evening/night scenes to improve IQ

    Cheers

No worries, I actually just tried one of Abe's favorite modes using his Anamorphic stretch trick for 1440p30. I made a thread here describing the method viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1694 here is an example video. That read on Abe's blog Id recommend to everyone and he also has a part 2 there with some more info.

This was pretty low light at just before sunset so image quality isn't the greatest and the speed is a bit too fast  for YouTube's low compression rate but gives you an idea of the 1440p to 16:9 stretch method which I think worked quite well here.

    Hi Matcerv

    Thanks man.
You seem to know a lot about the GoPro and which settings to use.
    Appreciated!

And how are you going with the contest?
Still a chance to be a top10 winner?
    How cool would that be...

    Hi Marcerv

I can see you use a system that you can see what the GoPro is seeing while being in the air.
    Which system do you use?

Im using the DJI AVL58 500mw setup with a screen on my radio.

Some info on my setup here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1155

I am really happy with everything except the stock radio will be replaced soon as I have had a few small losses of control and my video setup has much better range then the dji radio. Its better to be the other way around as id rather have the picture break up well before losing control. This way id use the video as an indicator for signal quality as you cant fly fpv with a poor video image but having a great image and losing control does make it a bit risky especially in aggressive flying.

I haven't really checked but I dont think I have anywhere near enough likes, kind of aimed at a judges top 3 but there are lots of great videos so that will be very unlikely too. I could do with another phantom and would love a gimbal but I think I will need to buy one instead.

How is your video going in it?

    Hi Matcerv

Mine is doing good, considering that it is my first movie made with the phantom.
It's ranking #1 on Youtube when your enter 'DJI Phantom Explore your Imagination'

Mine has about 80 likes and that's not enough to become a top 10 movie. I think that it is a shame that DJI has made the nr of likes that important. I've seen many great movies with very low likes. And I've seen many not so great movies with a lot of likes.

Maybe a miracle will happen today for the both of us :)

Thumbs up and love to see more of your movies. They are very helpful and fun to watch

    Cheers
    Rene

They are using it for promotion so they hope people spam and get exposure however as its all free marketing for them, its how these things run and thats why they also have the too 3 but id pick 3 others ahead of mine anyway lol. I was making the video anyway before the contest and just saw it fit ok so I entered it, would have made it and posted it even if there was no contest :) Its all part of the learning process as you get a little better each video.

I always use 2.7k video so I can do post stabilization, cropping, panning etc. and still come out with 1080p video.

Thanx KI for your respond. I thought that the higher the fps the better de image quality. But I see that's not true

I'll shoot my next flights in
    2,7 K 30fps
    WB auto
    Protune on

Or is it best to adjust WB all the time?

Do you import into Cineform and output 1080?
