I have repeatedly read that the compass needs to be recalibrated when you change location. But I still don't know how much distance change requires the recalibration. Therefore, if my takeoff is just 5 miles away, I am recalibrating. Am I being ridiculous? Does anyone know how much change is necessary? I am sure everyone does it with a 200 mile change. But where are we supposed to draw the line?

I'VE done it as little as 100 meters , only takes a second . just watch you lights .

I don't think distance matters. I took mine to Japan, several thousand miles away. I forgot to initiate calibration. It flew with no problems. I felt like an idiot afterwards to forget such a thing. But in my defense it was only my 3rd time flying it.

There's no reason to think of yourself an idiot.

You're inadvertently confirming what many already know and accept.
