How did you come to the conclusion that it's only taking 5 mp images? My p3s takes full 12mp photos like I imagine the majority of them do.

Well when I load an image to my computer it says pic info 5mb . ( JPEG)
I'd expect 12 mb have I got this all wrong?
    Apologies if I have.

5meg is the file size. Jpg files are compressed, you dont need a byte of info for each pixel. Look at the image oroperties for comfirmation.

    You're confusing megapixels with megabytes. mb=megabytes, mp=megapixels
What you're seeing is normal. Megabytes is how much space the picture takes up, and megapixels is how big the picture is.
5 megabytes is about right for a 12 megapixel photo.
You're getting full 12 mp photos.
