Ok guys I have been toying with an idea and would like ur opinions. I purchased a Spot Trace for 50.00 on a holiday sale very cheap and seems to work but a tad heavy. Up to this point I've had it strapped to the underneath, well today bored at work I went to tinkering. And stripped it down. Very easy to do. And very very light. This unit can be powered by either aaa batteries or a hard line that I'm thinking I will wire into the phantom.
My question is this since this unit doesn't use cell towers and send and receives via gps, if I mount it in the P2 housing will it interfere with the on board gps and cause me problems. I have added pictures as well of the strip down.

That dude is heavy at 87 grams. I looked at their website and:

Once activated and powered on, SPOT Trace will acquire its exact coordinates from the GPS network. SPOT Trace sends the GPS location to communication satellites.

There are no other details about how the tracker transmits its coordinates. I think Garmin used to sell a tracker device for hikers that could send a canned message or three but it's not on their website any longer. Maybe call the manufacturer and ask them.

If a phantom have a significant crash, most chances are that battery goes appart, so no power for gps track if wired.
