newbie using strictly B-Mode;
are fly-aways still possible?
what should one immediately do?
a. press Home button on RC over & over?
b. hold "down" lever down?
c. (a) & (b) at same time?
what else besides go catatonic...?

Fly-aways are always going to be a possibility since there is no way to completely eliminate pilot error.

Can you tell us more about your proposed fly-away scenario? Why exactly is the Phantom flying away? Without that information, it would be impossible to propose the correct solution.

Ah, well, the answer is yes if that is the question.

It can fly away in any mode. Fly aways are a glitch/issue, not something you can eliminate no matter how you fly. The probability of it flying away is pretty low, but you can do some things to mitigate the risk of aircraft loss if it does:

- Fly in open areas
- Get a GPS tracker
- Stay within VLOS
- Don't fly too high
- Learn to fly LOS in case you need to fly it back manually without video feed.

B-Mode only, never more than 100ft up-away;
never near buildings / utility poles / fences, etc.
never too close to trees;

The real question:
regardless of flying really safe all the time,
if fly-away happens, DO WHAT??
(preferably staying in B-Mode)

Novice question: can P4P+ be stolen
in flight by another RC operator???

All fly-aways are different. You'll need to figure out why your Phantom is flying away before you'll be able to recover it.

As above, you need to quickly assess what went wrong and try to fix it. Staying in B mode and recovering is highly unlikely. If you can't or aren't comfortable flying out of B mode, I'd suggest picking up a $20 acro quad on banggood.com and learn to fly comfortably fully manual.

Have 20+ flights in B-Mode;
Catch-22 = can't offer B-Mode fly-away strategy until
it
flies
away...
WHAAAAA??? :eek: :eek: :eek:

Pilot error isn't the only cause for flyaways! Although I expect that pilot error from know-it-all pilots may be a significant contributor.

True. However, my point was that the possibility of a fly-away will never be non-existent since there are always going to be some pilots who are doing something wrong.

As a new flyer, you fear your Phantom mysteriously flying away.
A little explanation might help answer your question better

Flyaway is a vague term that gets applied to a number of different things.
The term evolved in the early years of the P1 and P2 when there were (some) genuine issues.
But the term was also used as an excuse for losing your Phantom for any unknown reason.
When the P3 series came with better electronics and programming and a flight data recorder in the app we could finally see the actual flight data to investigate flyaways and often determine the cause.
And investigating many "flyaways" shows that genuine flyaways are very, very rare.
You still see forum posts saying my Phantom flew away but the most common cause is the operator not being familiar with the operation of the Phantom.
A few that frequently show up include:
Flying high downwind in strong winds that are too powerful for the Phantom to RTH against
Screwing up the compass with unnecessary recalibration leading to out of control flight.
Screwing up the compass with unnecessary recalibration leading to atti mode flight (and not understanding atti mode and how to fly with it.
Unfamiliarity with RTH and how it works
Flying behind obstacles like hills or tall buildings causing RTH out of sight
These are common user errors - they are not flyaways.
Understanding the operation of your Phantom is the best way to prevent "flyaways"

+1

And I think that most "fly aways" are because the pilot didn't know how to use Phantom in ATTI mode. A GPS error, a compass error, or any other error that launch ATTI mode, it's enough to let the wind "fly away" your drone. Unless you have practise to fly in these mode, you will have these fear installed in your head.

Lesson: Learn to fly without live feed and in ATTI mode!

Yep I would say learn to fly from the radar, if you get the fly away, switch the controller to atti mode and fly it back to your take off point by the radar only. Because the radar is so small as part of the whole screen, it tends to get over looked. But I would say try flying your drone out of visual line of sight, then fly it back looking only at the radar and the red position arrow. Once you have done this a few times, you should lose any fear you have of a fly -away.
