It appears that the Fat Shark Goggles are pretty widely accepted. Is there an acceptable alternative? I haven't found one yet.

There are alternatives. I don't know how they all compare to FatSharks though.

I am using a pair of these:
eBay-80" Virtual HDTV Goggles
Not cheap, but I wanted something that would display at least 480 TVL (most of the cheap goggles are half this). I ended up also buying an elastic glasses band to hold them snug to my face (wants to slide forward and off).
