Ethical dilemma

Seek help my friend, there are no black helicopters nor shape shifters.

Hahaha... if only... well, there ARE black helicopters. Just not interested the slightest in me.
Plenty of shape shifters too out there in nature... just not human (or even humanoid) ones.

I suppose I should have perhaps prefaced my rant with "I'm a business analyst for a living".
It's my job to use mathematics and data to improve profit, across a pretty wide variety of domains and clients.

I was also extremely fortunate in life (via the womb lottery) in that I benefited greatly from the savage waters of capitalism. In fact, before I earned a single cent in my life, I was probably somewhere in the top 4-5% of Americans by total familial wealth, which granted, doesn't take as much as you might think... So there ya go, I was born, and I had already won at capitalism! That totally seems fair, right?

Also, not only do I work to perpetuate capitalism every day, I also have personally greatly benefited from it and will likely continue to do so for the rest of my working life. That still doesn't mean I approve of the system, or enjoy watching the rich pull even further away from the middle/working classes. In fact, it amuses me greatly than many people who deride the "socialist" ideologies of others, are the ones who are most harmed by the "capitalist" policies currently in place.

Anyway... I digress (even further).

My point was really that you shouldn't really care about acting in a moral way towards Amazon, as they have zero concept of morality (like literally, by law), and certainly not towards you as an end consumer. They might give you a nice reply, or "let you keep" your unordered product... but their reasons are not "you were such a stand-up guy, i'm going to reward your morality", rather it's "automated procedure #XYZ (designed to maximize profit) has decided $insert_cust_name_here may keep their unordered product", except in nicer language.

Do well to your fellow man, but remember, corporations are NOT your fellow man.
Treat them as having "morality" at your own peril.

Well, that depends. Are YOU feeling guilty about it? Do YOU think it was fair?

I think the responses on this thread reflect the age of its members.

Nope, shouldn't matter if it's a corporation or a homeless person. The right thing is to notify the party and return the item.

If it's a good, honest company, send it back. If it's an airline or insurance company, keep it and chalk it up to getting a little return from a thief.

We aren't dealing with artificial intelligence here. Any corporation (or business of any kind) is comprised of people. Whether you like it or not, they are your fellow man. Now, I don't have a touchy feely love for Amazon. They are very large and owned by shareholders (also your fellow man) that are primarily only concerned about return on investment. But there are many smaller corporations that are comprised of a small group of people. Some of these people pride themselves on their morality and extend these beliefs into their business dealings. That's always how I conducted business when I had my production company many years ago. And, just like anything else, some people are crappier than others. Unfortunately, for the time being at least, we are forced to share the planet with these people. Perhaps we can all try a little harder to get along.

It just seems like you are advocating doing the wrong thing because of who you're doing it to. But the target of your actions doesn't change whether your actions are right or wrong. Perhaps I'm reading into your comments wrong, and if so, I apologize.

Oh, and just so it doesn't seem like I'm standing on a moral soapbox looking down at the sinners...I sometimes do the wrong thing just because of who I'm doing it to. But I own my actions and fully recognize them as wrong. I make no excuses and live with my decisions. Whatever you decide, you have to be okay with it.

Sell it to me- Amazon screwed me on what was said to be OEM battery. After a few flights I finally noticed and they wouldn't take it back. [emoji35]

What to do. Last week I ordered a 100w charger from Amazon. I received one about 3 days later. Today I just got another one in the mail. I checked my account to be sure I wasn't billed for a second one and I wasn't. Now what should I do? Send it back or share my good luck by selling it to someone at a discount? I feel compelled to send it back or karma will bite me in the but. What would you do?
Does not belong to you , I would send it back.

Why am I not surprised you feel this way. Just because it is a "corporation" does NOT make it OK to keep someones product of labor that was not earned. A corporation is not a nameless faceless uncaring entity, is simply a group of people working together toward common goals. They are created by the blood, sweat, and tears of people; real human beings, who had to take risks in life to get the company where it is. Your ethics in this matter should not change regardless if it is Bob and Suzie's store down the street, or Joe Blow D.B.A., or the biggest company on the planet. if it does then it reflects back on your character and what kind of person you are.

Socialism has such a dismal record of failure so blatant that only an intellectual or a liberal elitist could ignore it.

Do the right thing, your moral compass will thank you AND continue to work properly.

I ordered and paid for a watch from Amazon.ca. It was ok but not perfect for my needs. I selected the return feature of Amazon and the selling company, not Amazon, sent me an email to keep the watch and they refunded my credit card. Cool. The watch was $90 CAD.

So do the right thing.

Totally agree with all in doing the right thing. My bird was taken from a tee but dude did right thing. Contacted me and got it back to me.

Wow, feels like I stumbled into a heated ethics conversation. Is this not the new Ashley Madison site, my bad. Carry on. Lol

The high road is the best road, but unfortunately, oft times least traveled.
