I just received my E300 Hex kit for my 550. I see they provide a power hub, do I have to use that or can I solder the wires to the lower frame of the 550? What is the purpose of the new power hub?

The power hub (aka power distribution board or "PDB") included in that kit is just a nice add-on for those who are building a rig without one already built in to the frame. Many non-DJI airframes require you to figure out your own solution for getting power from the batt to all ESC's and the avionics too.

You can go right ahead and use the wiring built in to the 550 frame plates, I'm pretty sure that's what most all 550 owners have done.
