Custom 80w LED light bar for Phantom 3

My father is working on those details. "Drone-Fan" is his name.

He should be posting up pretty soon. He's commenting on the 100w led thread

Hey guys, BVC & I built this light kit together. Here is a parts list and a brief look at the first Strobe light bar that got us into this.

For weights / measures / times:
  • Wgt = Setup (frame & battery) weighs 16oz with the 2200 mAh battery. The 16oz setup flies well. Will reduce your flight time by 20-30%
  • Wgt = Setup (frame & battery) weighs 20oz with the 6000 mAh battery. The 20oz setup flies ok, but you can tell the drone is grunting a bit. Will reduce your flight time by 35-40%
  • Pwr = Measured current draw is 5.0 amps @ 14.8 volts = 74 watts
  • Pwr = Estimated Lumen output is 750lm x 8 led reflectors = 6000 lumens. ( note: even though sellers state these reflectors with LED will output 1000lm, this is B-Sh-t. You really need to check the manufactures data sheets to estimated true lumen output )
  • The LED reflectors came with Cree XLM-T6 (pre-installed) that were likely knock-offs, half of them failed in the first hour of use. I replaced them all with authentic Cree XLM-T6.
Any other questions let me know.
IF YOU BUILD ONE, please share your experience and we can learn from each other ,,, Thanks

Here is the parts list.

You need to remove the springs and the driver on the base.

Below is the first version, without reflectors. This build was very bright, however without reflectors effective & significant light was not achieved above 150'. But the advantage is about 4oz less weight.

Below is Strobe setup. Whole different frame and simple rocker switch for power, individual push button switches to change the 30 flash patterns for each side. This unit draws 2.5A @ 12v = 30 watts. I have used this for LOS measurements. Daytime visibility is 2.5+ miles, Nighttime visibility is 10+ miles. Weight of the unit is 10oz, / with a redesign I think I can get this down to 8oz.

So on your color strip lighting where you have it attached to the Phantom battery inside is that wire soldered in. It's hard to tell how you have it connected in the picture inside the Phantom.

Does anyone know of a decent light system ready made for UK flyers to buy? I'd prefer it run off its own battery, i like the Polar Pro light kit but i'm unsure if they deliver to the uk.

no it just slips over terminals

I thought about doing this!!

This club meets up every thursday in Northern Sacramento, CA and they dog fight at night. At day/dusk they fly for fun then about half an hour past sunset they do dog fights. In between the matches it's fun flying again. ALL are laced with LED lights!! I thought about getting some and joining them in the fun flight session.

Now that is more than awesome !!

Those strobes are awesome!

We've been doing something similar with the spot light for the last few years in the movie industry to emulate a police helicopter. The key to selling it is getting some parallax on the shadows.

So my father decided to build a LED spot light for his drone. And is this sucker BRIGHT! I don't know the full details on the parts list but I do know they are 10w CREE bulbs. 8 bulbs total driven at full power.

Here's a few photos and an initial test flight video. We flew at my home so we didn't go too far as you know.. drones + spotlights = pissy neighbors!!

We will be headed to the Notomas dog fights this thursday and I plan to get some better video of this setup and a much better example of how bright this sucker is. There was a lot of light interference at my home that I'm sure adjusted my camera a bit too much.

Anyway - questions or comments - here are the photos and video!!

So, BVC. How far can you see that in the daytime? (Note: I'm also in the Sacto area - Roseville)

I'm not sure. We haven't done a daytime flight yet. But I know a spot we can try a test flight to find out!! It would be pretty far. Both the emergency strobe and LED bars are very bright.

We (Drone-Fan & I) reside in Rocklin so pretty much next door to you.

A great place to fly would be at this park on top of a hill near our homes. Overlooks Thunder Valley / Lincoln. Great area to do our daytime test flight.
