Controller not talking to DJI Phantom 2 Software

I have the latest Phantom 2 installer running on on Win 8. No readings from the controller. After a while I get a message from the software to connect to the controller. I am trying to reset my compass.

I have the P2 connected to a USB port.

What do I do?

I would power every thing off, including the computer.
wait a few min.
boot the computer.
power up the controller, wait for 2 min
then power up the phantom and wait 2 min
Then start the application and see if it will see the controller.

if not you might have to directly connect to the controller.

you will need a USB mini not micro cable that is not very long.
or use a powered USB hub.
You will have to take the back cover off of the controller.
