Controller and Phantom not communicating with PC

Hello everyone....new person here!

Just got my Phantom 2 yesterday and I love it. However, when trying to upgrade the firmware (copter and controller), plugging in the USB to either does nothing. I do have the PC Assistant installed on my Win 7 laptop but the status lights don't change . What am I doing wrong? I'm so used to the way GoPro updates the cameras....so easy.

To update the firmware you should have it plugged into the USB connected to your computer and the Phantom, AND the transmitter should be on as well as the Phantom. If the Transmitter is off I don't think it works. Be sure to remove your props before starting.

And you need to install the driver!

Yes, almost definitely an issue with driver. I had same issue and realized I'd overlooked the download and install of the driver. Once installed, the equipment was immediately recognized by the computer as soon as I plugged in the USB cable.
