Compass won't calibrate

I've just got my Phantom 2, and, going through the setup procedure in the manual, I'm stuck at the compass calibration step. I flick the switch back and forth half-a-dozen times, but the calibration sequence doesn't start. Any ideas? (I'm trying to do it inside the house:is that a bad thing?)
