Compass error in mid air

Are the many compass problems being reported and the frequent calibrations people are doing with the P3 a hardware - software issue or user errors?

Why should a properly calibrated compass have to be frequently re-calibrated?

I have not noticed this kind of issue with Pixhawk based quads using Arducopter.

You don't have to frequently calibrate the P3 compass-- unless you are going over 100 miles from the last flight location. That is the consensus on this forum.
Compass errors occur when the P3 compass sensor is close to metal objects as before takeoff -- there are few mid air reports-- the one the ground reports are most numerous -- there are many software issues, usually because of the various devices that can be used to run the Phantom. There are many user errors--- most problems result from user error.
