compass dance

I was watching a movie and they were talking about a "compass dance" and some magnetic mountains that can originate it. So, Since my lovely quad was just beside me, I am thinking, would be nice to have with us, while we are out there Flying, a good old compass, just to check if there are some interferences? I mean a mechanical compass?
or it is just useless and I should go back watch the movie?

I would think a good old fashioned compass is quite a bit less sensitive than the one on the aircraft...!

true, but I assume that a one less sensitive is anyway better than nothing no?
maybe we can use the compass that every smartphone has in order to check if there are magnetic interferences?
what I am talking about is that to discover the phantom compass is having a bad time it's too late and may be useful to check some other tool, mechanical or electronical, before the flight. I think I will give it a chance, maybe testing them beside some real source of interferences.
