I cannot complete the compass calibration for my Phantom 1. The process seems normal when it is rotated in the horizontal plane, the LED goes green. But then when it is rotated in the vertical plane, the LED flashes red indicating the calibration failed. I have tried it many times with the same result. Also did the calibration thru my PC using the "assistant". Same result. Anyone one have any suggestion? Thanks.

I am assuming you did this procedure before and know how to rotate it. Check YouTube.

Simple way is to wave a magnet in circles in front of the compass. Try again.

Best way is to do the same procedure while plugged in the assistant software and look at the compass values before and during this procedure. Get to know the ideal values. Mod should be near 1600.

Also try doing that in different locations away from metal of all kinds whether under ground (water pipes) around from afar (metal construction frames).
Some members (including me) reported having compass error taking off from the car metal roof top!
