Compass calibration and zemuse

What is the best thing to do with the gimbal when doing the compass dance, unplugging the cable or just let it tilt?

It just seems like the latter might strain the motors.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

I have found the pointing it down works the best. Doesn't piss it off and have it go limp for 30 seconds or so.
