Cheapest way to obatin smooth control over X1 (gimbal tilt)

I am looking for the cheapest way to control the gimbal tilt (H3-3D).

Ive seen options using an upgraded controller but is that the only way to gain this capability?
I am not against spending the money on the controller if it is but I want to make sure that is the only way before dropping the coin especially since I am 100% happy with the controls range of the factory controller (-x1 control choppiness)

You could buy a $5 linear potentiometer (5kohm) and install it in the controller replacing the one with the crappy plastic lever. Quite a bit of info incl youtube vids etc if you google phantom pot mod.

I have to say that, with the gimbal tilt control gain slider set at '1' in Phantom Assistant 3.0 (Advanced), I find the normal tilt control to be super smooth
