Both creative solutions. I always like seeing homemade solutions. As for the original packing box could it be sprayed with some sort of rubber solution to make it more durable ?

Maybe this would work and make the cardboard boxing last forever ?

Ha ha, that's a good use of the box insert . Not sure about the plastic spray
