Re: Change camera

A very big expense for a little benefit... (IMHO)

Because it's:
a) Not important to the general forum audience and,
b) For that reason shouldn't be a sticky, i.e. in a forum called Important Stickies.

In most forums I've been a part of only moderators can make something a sticky and they usually do it because it has something important to say to the group. However it looks like on this board anyone can make a sticky. And while I'm on it, labeling a forum "Important Stickies" is redundant. By it's nature a sticky is important, otherwise it shouldn't be a sticky.

My friend for me its important and from here i can take my information. .here i learn many things which i couldn't find anywere...maybe somebody else interesting if can change camera to gopro from phantom vision plus...so 8f you thing thats no interest you just avoid it.thnks
Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought when you asked Cocoa Beach Kiter why this thread shouldn't be in the Important Stickies forum you actually wanted to know! I answered for him and maybe I shouldn't have.

And as to your original question, there are lots of posts about that in other forums on this board. It's probably one of the most frequently asked questions.

Re: Change camera

I'm in the process.

Going to borrow a gopro 3+ silver/black that has the built in wifi.
Going to do some test first with portable wifi that will arrive this friday.

Firstly.. this is only theorectical as I dont own a GoPro (yet - deciding is the 3+ black better than the 4 black in value).
It's an alternative and it will not provide IOSD (yet).
Flame me as much as you want as any feed back is good feedback.

I'm looking at 2 paths. One is to use my existing vision plus with a $400 zenmuse gimbal; and the other is going down the $1500 path with a Phantom 2 + H3-3D (950), immersionRC (100), Black pearl 32 channel (299), mini IOSD (75) - go pro not included.
The $1500 is tested and stable and does not have immediate video feed cut-out, and hence the premuim

I DO NOT want to go down the DE swappable path. $400 is a little expensive.

What do i know..
GoPro operates on 2.4Ghz and that will not interfere with the vision series controllers (5.8ghz).
Some of the GoPro models have wifi streaming back to IOS and Androids via the app.
The app can change video settings, capture images, record on the fly.
There will be no radar and telemetry as the IOSD cannot be fed back.
There is 2-4 second video lag (dont fly out of visual range i guess)
There is a 75-100 feet LOS limitation for video feeds.

This would be great for flyers like myself who don't like to venture far.

I've seen many AR drone users create wifi extenders with battery pack to to overcome the distance limitation.
What i cannot prove (until i obtain a GoPro) is whether a wifi extender like below would work.

You can then later get a battery and make a portable wifi extender.

We know the zenmuse gimbal is working on the vision series with a limitation of the 7th channel.
I assume that the Phantom tool will resolve that

Can anyone see any problems?

This guy below has seem to take the same approach. His video isn't well documented and he hasn't posted the results.

And just a note.. Phantom 2 + Zenmuse H3-3D = $950. Zenmuse H3-3D on its own is $350-450.
I'm sure i would be able to make a hot swap plate to switch between GoPro and back to vision.
This is why its a conflicting path...

Re: Change camera

I think the problem you will face is the Wi-Fi range will be extremely limited. Perhaps you could come up with a Wi-Fi booster and antenna array to extend the range, but this will add even more to the cost & complexity.

Very true.

The wifi range extender is $14 on dx.com and about $11 on ebay. It says 300 meters but i reckon about 150m actual.

This alternative solution i think is best for those who have crashed their cameras. These people shouldnt fly far in the first place. The lack telemetry and wifi range will keep their bird in visual range.

To be honest, i rarely fly greater than 500m. The subject matter and phantom is always in visual range (but thats just me).
