Been doing a search to see if I can hook up either a Tarot 2d gimbal or Zenmuse to my Phantom 1 without wiring into the Phantom? Can I just mount an small external battery to the phantom to power either one of these? Not interested in being able to pan down. Just need a straight on shot that is stabilized.

Tarot - Yes
Zenmuse - No.

If you're serious about making a handheld rig, I'd recommend a 3-axis gimbal (such as the Arris CM3000), one less axis to smooth out!
tho does add 100g in weight/reducing flight time on a multirotor.
