Camera Gimbal error, buzz

After a small crash I get a "gimbal error"; the camera in the app, and seems to align itself if I tip the quad, but it wont stop buzzing. Seems to come from the gimbal directly attached to camera (up and down direction). I have seen threads showing typical cause/fix (something about a splined shaft?). Any help or links appreciated!

Just to add descriptive fact: more careful look shows camera making slight adjustments on vertical axis (2 degrees left, 2 degrees right, back and forth...) so problem must be in the TOP potentiometer; also if I hold at extreme angles it stops buzzing/hunting. Finally, if I try to do an IMU advanced calibration it gets about half way and says "too hot, shut down and try later".
