Cable connection between RC and phone?

I'm under the impression the RC and phone are connected via wifi yet, I've seen several videos in which there is a cable connection between the RC and phone.

I don't own a drone yet and was wonder why the cable is used in the first place.

For the TOP phantoms with lightbridge (p3 advanced, professional, p4, p4 pro, mavic pro, the connection is through the usb cable betwwen mobile device and the radio. The P3 standard uses wifi.
