Can you try out atti settings while still in the safety of beginner mode or is it something you have to try properly.

Nope. You can set maximum distance from your start point. I don't recommend going from beginner to atti, go to p mode first (P4) gps will keep you in place if you let go of the sticks. P mode is slow compared to atti, atti is fairly aggressive and the wind will carry it away, gps will maintain altitude only. Better know how to fly in atti or sport. Small safe steps, I learned to fly a small syma x5 first, better to crash a 50 dollar bird first, ask me how I know.
