I was taking off from my boat dock, worn wood surface and when I initiated the props the app started beeping at me, I eventually figured it out as the avoidance system reading confusion off the sensors on the bottom. As soon as I took off it stopped.

Does the type of surface matter? I hadn't expected that.

The surface can and does matter (as depicted in the response above). I note DJI has lumped the VPS and ultrasound in the same discussion. It might be you we're getting two conflicting readings, perhaps the boards themselves and the water below (depending on the board spacing). It may have been too dark, non discernible or repeating pattern ect. If the problem is repeatable and doesnt occur over other surfaces you should be confident that the dock is a problem surface for the sensors.
