Antenna position for best range

For best range, should the antennas be pointing toward the side, or up?

Vertical. Always.

Vertical, but be mindful of the "cone of silence". Don't point the antenna directly at the aircraft. This has been the classic teaching in R/C for 40 years. I've never seen it to be a practical problem in R/C planes, but these FPV drones are more likely to fly closer to the extremes of transmitter range than R/C planes. Therefore, bigger cone area.
