How far north do you have to go to be able to experience the northern lights?

Some people see them in Wyoming and Colorado when the KP level is really high. Its pretty rare to see them in Anchorage which is south Alaska, Im in the smack middle of alaska.

What is the best season for seeing them. The reason I ask is because this is a bucket list thing for me and I want to head that way when there is a good chance to see them.

Statistically February and March but the last 3 years my most memorable auroras have been between early fall and Christmas
