20 Acres with Drone Deploy

Thanks but usually it is just not initiating the image captures. When I load the images into my photogrammetry software you can see the images that were captured and there are always huge gaps. That being said, I recall Drone Deploy in one of its latest updates stating it had fixed an issue where some users were experiencing image capture issues and today was the first day I tried it since then and all of my images were captured perfectly, no gaps. I hope my issue is resolved, at least using Drone Deploy. I had to cancel my grid before it was complete as my ipad battery dropped to 5% as it couldn't handle the cold, but I did get 185 pictures captured, which is astounding for me.
 
Also, does anyone else have trouble with the altitude reading in the EXIF? I fly at sea level and when I use Drone Deploy and other such apps, more often than not my altitude readings in the EXIF are negative. The flight I captured today had all of the images with -36m or so altitude in the EXIF when I had the App flight altitude set to 165 ft (50m). Only on rare occasion is the altitude in the EXIF captured as not being negative elevation.

My problem hasn't been with the altitude data in the exif, but with the processing. All the heights in the elevation map were compressed to less than 1/2 their true value. So a 8.5-9 ft wall reads as 3 ft! Tried several different mission parameters with the same results. The exif data all reads correctly. Ran the same data through maps made easy with the same results and MME reported the average flight altitude as 125 ft agl when it was actually flown at 200. Then flew the same missions with a second P3A and the heights appear to be correct! Neither MME or DD have been able to tell me what's going on!
 
Recently watched this video explaining how "sea level" is determined, particularly for GPS. Could you be at the physical level of the sea, but GPS is different?

This is going to be a massive post but it will likely explain why your P3A had the correct altitudes, I assume it still reads its elevation Above Ground Level and not Sea Level as our Phantom 4s do. Also, I have looked again at the EXIF data and the altitude is not negative, but it is stored as Below Sea Level and that is why Pix4D is assigning it a negative elevation, strange. In an EXIF editor you can manually change this value to Above Ground Level and Pix4D then reads it correctly but this can be cumbersome to do for hundreds of images. Anyways, here's a response from Pix4D regarding negative elevation values from a Phantom 4:

Therefore our developers suspect something wrong in the DJI EXIF regarding the vertical coordinates. As a consequence, we always recommend to process with ground control points (GCPs) in order to fix these uncertainties.
About using GCPs: Using GCPs

If you do have GCPs, you could get for instance 5 points from a Web Map Service server over your area (e.g. Daft Logic): How to obtain the georeference using 2D or 3D GCPs taken from a Web Map Service

  1. Make sure to define the appropriate GCP coordinate system. The Daft Logic website takes the coordinates from Google Maps which refers to the mean sea level (MSL) egm96 to estimate the vertical coordinate.
  2. On the menu bar, click Project > GCP/MTP Manager... > GCP Coordinate System > Edit... > choose WGS 84.
  3. Then click Advanced Coordinate System > select MSL egm96.
  4. Then insert/import the points according: How to add / import and mark Manual Tie Points in the rayCloud
  5. In the field Type make sure to set Ground Control Point, and manually enter the coordinates you took from the website.
  6. Then on the menu bar, click Process > Reoptimize.
Regarding the negative values, it happened that the field referring to the altitude above sea level is actually called "Below Sea Level", which might be confusing. They probably made a mistake with the reference name which seems to happen time to time.

A consequence is that when Pix4Dmapper reads the geolocation contained in the EXIF, the software is misled and interpret "below" as a negative value. Our suggestions using points to fix the vertical coordinate as mentioned above will probably solve this problem.

No, DJI records the GPS altitude (MSL) on the P3 now too. That's why the MME app actually takes a photo on the ground before takeoff. That image is used to 'calibrate' the MSL reading to local AGL heigths. did my own, by hand comparison by subtracting the altitude reported in the reference photo from that of several mission photos. All were pretty much spot on the programmed height AGL. Not a GCP per se, but it does a pretty good job of fixing the relative heights. Thanks for the comments on creating GCP's. I figured that you could generate pretty accurate ones using some of the published maps, but hadn't had time to research it. Your comments will be a big help.
