I have the 2.4Ghz version. I find that the PC GS doesn't display the battery info.

beware of windows GS. it doesn't show the remaining battery. i think it might still show warning if the battery is low. please check this.

The GS has a built in usb-com adapter Have you installed the proper drivers? go to device manager and have a look under "com ports"

yup but after it's mission you need to use your controller or GS to land. it won't self land after a mission.

Ipad mini works. Nope, there isn't an android version. However, there is a windows version.

if you had bought the hardware ground station, you can update the firmware but that's all you can do. you technically won't need the hardware ground station once dji releases their updated app.

are you trying to pair the ipad and the ground unit in bluetooth settings? you don't need to do that just fire up the ipad GS app the leds seem to be correct that the air and ground end are linked properly

Did you do a compass calibration after your attached your canon camera? The problem may be that the camera is throwing off your compass. Connect it to the assistant software and you will be able to see the compass readings change with and without your camera.

I didn't actually do much flying in the sim mode at all. Just sent it on it's mission but in a very vast open flat area. Just have your controller ready to take control if the phantom starts doing something funny. Start off with smaller missions then progress from there.

is your phantom's position correctly represented in the google earth maps? google earth might have an offset but it usually happens only in china.

Yes, you would need the Phantom to be connected to run the simulator. It's the same with the Ipad app. It needs to do this to know it's starting height. There's a setting for "altitude offset" in PC GS. Take note of that very closely. When you generate the waypoints, it will show a new window...
