Seems like you got lucky in that it made it all the way to the ground... realize the images in the track log are from summer (edit: well, no snow), but a canopy like that (especially if it's evergreen) will snag a bird pretty easily. Interested to hear what you find in the onboard logs.

As was suggested, it would be really good to get the logs off the drone - especially before you send anything to DJI. Those logs have whatever info was generated after your iPad lost the signal. Sounds like you lost contact and it may just show slow steady depletion of the batteries until it...

Remember that the elevation is relative to your take-off elevation, not relative to the terrain. If you fly anywhere that has hills, the 30m RTH elevation can put you into the middle of a decent-sized tree pretty easily.

Good info... I know the data is captured at a pretty high frequency so any loss of contact with the battery terminals might display as a voltage drop for one or two data points prior to total loss of power. I assume there is some capacitance in the power circuitry that would allow it to write...

I know this is off-topic, but I had to register with the Inspire forum just to see the pictures in that thread... crazy stuff. I looked but couldn't find any posts of the crash video or recovery. Doesn't look like the guy has been online in a while.

I don't know the person who made the comments, but my impression of Aussies in general is that they are a fabulous, easy-going bunch. I've visited Melbourne and have known several Aussies at work. Maybe he just had a bad day...
