I used the "follow me" feature in the DJI Go app. I'm sure I'll get blasted on this forum for admitting that, but the roads had almost no traffic and there was no people walking around so if it were to crash it wouldn't be a terrible thing except for me.
I tried using the "follow me" feature...
Here is a quick video I put together for the TCHA's 2016 conference.
Shot with:
DJI Phantom 3 Advanced
Nikon D90 (stills)
GoPro Hero 3+
Edited in DaVinci Resolve 12
Took the bird out to the lake near my home. It probably wasn't the best time of day to shoot due to the angle of the sun, but it was the only chance I had all weekend to fly. Also, my first time editing with DaVinci Resolve, which I am a new fan of now.
I agree. My thinking though is that the OA is more useful in the autonomous flying modes more than manual flying modes. Either way, it's not worth the upgrade to me.
Thanks for the tip on DaVinci. It appears that the free version is also good for non-linear editing up to 1080P. I was about to drop some coin on Adobe Premier or Final Cut Pro, but I'm going to give this a spin and see how well it works out.
So the obstacle avoidance is only forward flying then, right? If that's the case then it's even more of a reason not to get it. To me, avoiding obstacles when flying forward isn't a problem. The larger challenge comes from flying backwards, or side-to-side. If that isn't part of the feature...
Most, if not all, of the autonomous flying abilities are available with the Autopilot app for $30. So in my mind it comes down to:
- faster than P3
- Obstacle avoidance (but only if flying forward or backward)
Definitely not worth $1400
If they were to drop it to $1000 during the holidays...
I did some flying around Reimers Ranch Park which is just outside of Austin TX. Most of the footage from the flight had the props in it, so I cut it up to remove all that. After reviewing the footage it's become clear that I really need to get the ND filters.
