This is a good point. There was also a rumored data logger that was supposed to be released in the last firmware update but it didn't materialize. Without a confirmation from someone within DJI, a rumor isn't worth a whole lot. That being said, its hard to blame the developer for not wanting...

If you always lose control signal before video signal, you are not a good candidate for the app unless you first extend your control range. This is not the developers fault, but rather your misunderstanding. The information describing how the app works is readily available prior to app purchase.

The battery pins are for the data/telemetry information. Even if they don't have a good connection, it will not bring your copter down. Power to the copter is accessed through the 2 larger size connectors and is not affected by the data pins.

So what would you do if your otherwise well functioning battery suddenly showed symptoms of a bad cell, began auto land sequence, and stopped responding to your throttle command? Your thoughts regarding S1 reset works in many situations, but won't help if a defective battery can't handle the load.
