It actually works quite well to keep the gimble stable. I was worried that it would put too much upward pressure on the gimble but I watched very closely with a flashlight as the gimble made contact with the eggcrate foam. It really just gently rests on it.

I have had same problem while flying in middle of the day, when the temps are high. My iPhone gets hot and the FPV gets very slow and pixilated. Try flying when it's cooler, mornings or evenings.
