Great idea for the shelf in the back of the car. Didn't see anyway to hold stuff down while in transit. I'd add a strap to help hold stuff down in case of hard braking etc.
I hand catch most of the time. Controller in left hand with neck strap. Turn the Phantom and hover with the battery towards you. Walk to it and grab right strut with right hand keeping your thumb out. Controller left stick down, after it has shutdown use thumb to turn off battery.
I put a small plastic tab on the left stick. Those key chain cards that stores give out work great. Then when I make my turn, my left thumb holds the tab against the controller and locks the stick in place. If I need to make adjustments, I move the tab a little. I've got some nice smooth...

I flew south of the GWB around the sunken ferry in Edgewater NJ this past December. That flight took me over the Hudson River as well.
I agree the polarpro case is too big and the filters move around too much. I store a lens cleaning cloth inside to take up the space. The internal space could be better quality with a liner similar to the liner supplied with the pouches.
I'd say you were very lucky. There are many horror stories of broken cameras, gimbals, and cracked shells including board mounts with lesser crashes. These repairs can cost hundreds of dollars and still the a/c may not be right. I doubt (if there is a) next time the a/c will fair as well...
