I'd say just go fly it. I only just took mine off beginner mode the last time I flew it. You will poop your pants when you see your £4×× phantom become a spec in the sky but just keep aware of what your doing and keep LOS.
I've set my RTH at 40m. This is something I've not used yet but plan on...
Dji recommend an IMU calibration before your first flight. I did one as I think the X figure on the imu on Mine was not on zero.
For what it's worth I updated my bird straight out the box and had no problems so far.
Took it off beginner for the first time tonight. So scary watching it just fly so far away. Think I only took it to around 60m high and around 120m distance.
So far no loss of signal although I do get 'loosing signal' flash every now and then but I still have full control.
I'm yet to turn beginner mode off yet so can't say if I've got naff range or not. One thing I don't plan on doing though is flying my P3S far away. I want LOS at all times.
What firmware are you on? Mine was on 1.2 out the box. I think 1.6 also stops the 'battery shut off in flight' problem which was another thing I didn't want to happen.
Personally I updated straight out the box. 1) because i just thought of I get a warranty issue DJI might refuse as the firmware is not up to date.
2) I don't know any different as I've never flew it on any other firmware.
