I don't know if you have resolved your P4 Advanced distance issues, but I have made numerous distance tests with my older P4 and my Advanced. The older P4 without a doubt gets better range than the P4 Advanced, although the specs don't bear that out. I can easily get well over 20 K with my P4...
Thanks Chazz, I am using a 6600 split right now, but I purchased it already split. Thinking of trying the split on the 8000, but want to make sure I know what I'm doing :)
Using a LiHv 6600 with no camera I have gone out to 66 K feet and back landing with 1%. A friend of mine strapped on 2X4000 Lipos with no camera and got out to 70 K and back...It would seem splitting the LiHV 8000 would have better results?
I would recommend using 14 gauge vs 12, 14 is lighter and is more than adequate for the voltage/current demands when using external batteries. Every bit of weight saved translates to longer flying times.

No, the amps will not pass the signal. You may get few hundred feet, but then the signal will drop off requiring you to turn on the amps. I've done this numerous times by accident :)
